Maritime Discovery Centre Steering Committee Bolsters Membership
(Brockville) – The Maritime Discovery Centre of the Thousand Islands (MDC) steering committee today announced the addition of two new members that bring a wealth of experience to the table.
Ben Tekamp, a highly respected community volunteer and former Mayor of the City of Brockville, and Terry Simzer, a veteran of professional communications, accepted invitations in early March to join the committee to add their expertise to what is becoming this region’s premier tourist destination.
“I readily accepted this opportunity to serve my community because of the scope and focus of the steering committee members,” outlined Tekamp. “The breadth of the committee’s plans to involve so many other tourist destinations in the MDC concept is unique. This isn’t just about the MDC. This is about developing the MDC to become a magnet that provides tourists with connections to all kinds of other experiences in the Thousand Islands area and on both sides of the border. This is becoming an international project with tremendous potential.”
“Over the coming months we are going to provide the details to the public of what this discovery centre will look like and why people across our region and beyond will want to experience its fascination,” said Simzer. “Last year when I was on the sidelines I wanted to know why the centre would attract my attention. Now that I’ve had a taste of what is to come I can’t wait for the doors to open and I’m so excited to see that schools on both sides of the border will be invited to become involved in what the centre will offer and look like.”
The steering committee volunteer members are developing key marketing strategies and fundraising initiatives while keeping a sharp eye on financial expenditures to ensure the project is finished on time and on budget.
Over the next number of months the committee will provide the public with regular updates on construction progress, fundraising developments, details on the centre’s exhibits, and various related initiatives including tourism partnerships.
The Maritime Discovery Centre is a $20 million, 27,000 square foot tourist attraction to be located on Brockville’s waterfront alongside the Tall Ships Landing condominium development.
