New Maritime Discovery Centre (MDC)
Appointments
David Cybulski, spokesperson for the MDC Steering Committee, announced today the appointment of Gino Giannandrea as Chairman of the MDC Steering Committee. Gino has been a member of the committee since last January. "His experience as Director of Education for the Upper Canada School Board, along with his leadership skills, has brought invaluable benefits to the board and Gino is a natural fit as chairperson" says Cybulski.
Also announced today is the appointment of Bob Burchett, as Executive Director for the MDC. "Bob has had extensive experience in managing public/private partnerships as well as large-scale tourism attractions with an emphasis on interactive and interpretive experiences. This is an ideal fit for the MDC role" indicates Cybulski.
"I am excited about the MDC project and feel I will be able to add value in making this a first-class discovery centre" says Burchett.
The proposed 27,000 square foot tourism and education facility is intended to provide an important economic stimulus to the downtown core of the City as well as enhance the waterfront region and create new employment opportunities. The project is expected to attract visitors and students from across Eastern Ontario on a year-round basis, providing a range of economic benefits for the entire community.
The Maritime Discovery Centre of the Thousand Islands will be a signature tourism attraction and a significant tourism destination in Eastern Ontario. It will bring more visitors to the area and encourage them to stay longer and spend more money in the region. The Centre will be designed to serve as a multi-use convention facility and exhibition hall for the community.
