NEW RELEASE: MARITIME DISCOVERY CENTRE OF THE THOUSAND ISLANDS
David Cybulski, a member of the steering committee and spokesperson for the proposed Maritime Discovery Centre of the Thousand Islands announced today the details of the funding agreement with the City of Brockville in partnership with Tall Ships Landing and the Province of Ontario.
As previously announced, the Provincial and Federal Governments have pledged over 11.3 million dollars in funding support towards the 18 million dollar project under the Building Canada Fund.
Under the agreement, the MDC project must be completed by March 31, 2016.
Cybulski indicates " the steering committee of the MDC is delighted with the terms of the Contribution Agreement. We are more confident than ever that this project will be built and operate successfully. We are now planning on a MDC completion date of June 30, 2012.
Simon Fuller, who is the developer of the Tall Ships Landing project says: "The MDC in an integral part of the
Tall Ships Landing project and I am very pleased to see the funding agreement details. I am confident that all parts of this project will proceed and the target date of June 30, 2012 for the opening of the MDC will be met".
David Leverton, Executive Director of the Maritime Discovery Centre pointed out that "this is great news for Brockville and the Thousand Islands Region. We are planning to build a first-class discovery centre that everyone will be proud of".
David Henderson, Mayor of Brockville indicates "this announcement and the planned completion of the Maritime Discovery Centre could not come at a better time for our City and the Thousand Islands Region. It will stimulate the economy in many ways and will improve our quality of life in Brockville".
After 25 years of providing on-water experiential education aboard their tall ships, Bytown Brigantine Foundation looks forward to developing a collaborative partnership with the new Maritime Discovery Centre.
VISION FOR THE MARITIME DISCOVERY CENTRE
The Maritime Discovery Centre will provide a central location for the experiential learning, offering hands-on instruction, interactive displays and outreach programs focused on the environmental and historical heritage of the St. Lawrence River.
The Centre will support a growing region supplying much-needed facility space for community organizations to host social functions, workshops and small conferences, and provide residents with a gathering place to enjoy educational, recreational and cultural activities all in one place.
