Underwater World

The diving industry is thriving in Brockville and the 1000 Islands region and the new Centre will help increase public awareness about the need to preserve our underwater heritage.

The 1000 Islands Region is one of the world’s best fresh-water shipwreck diving destinations and home to a large number of shipwrecks. Increased water clarity, due in large part to the accidental introduction of the zebra mussel (Dreissenia polymorpha), has made these shipwrecks easier to see and enjoy. The Centre will help the public better understand how divers interact with this underwater water world and help unlock many of the secrets about the St. Lawrence River’s aquatic environment.

Quick Fact: The 1000 Islands Ontario is an archipelago consisting of 1,865 islands that vary in size from over 100 sq km (40 sq miles) to only a few square metres. This unique island area provides important natural habitat for many different types of flora and fauna as well as migratory fish and birds.
